Dame Judi Dench is the star of Alchemy’s latest VR film!

December 15, 2017

Alchemy VR recently had the opportunity to work with one of Britain’s most loved actresses, Dame Judi Dench. We were invited to make an immersive experience alongside the making of the documentary special Judi Dench: My Passion for Trees, created by Atlantic Productions for the BBC.

Judi Dench: My Oak Tree VR is a pioneering, fully immersive virtual reality experience that allows viewers to fly around and through the most impressive oak tree in Judi Dench’s garden. Using some of the most advanced 360 technology, cutting edge science and poetic storytelling, this heart-warming journey brings Judi’s tree alive in a completely new way.

The team worked from real scan data collected by Dr Mathias Disney, a Reader in Remote Sensing in the Department of Geography at UCL and his colleague Dr Phil Wilkes to create cutting-edge graphics which are used to reveal startling insights into the life of Judi’s oak. The experience allows audiences to further understand the trees within Judi Dench’s 6-acre garden. Travelling up the trunk and deep within the branches of Judi’s favourite oak tree, audiences learn how this incredible carbon capture machine is helping to save our planet.

The experience had it’s first outing at the premiere screening of the TV programme at Kew Gardens on 6th December, and it can be viewed now on the BBC Arts and Alchemy Facebook pages.
